Four steps for international applicants wanting to pursue a master’s degree:

1. Apply for admission to the master’s degree program at the corresponding institute

To find out about the application processes, please refer to the appropriate master’s degree program and apply your completed application to the program coordinator. The specifications and documentation you will need to submit with your application, as well as the deadlines, vary widely from program to program.

If your application is approved by the supervisor of your selected master’s degree program, he or she will issue you a letter of acceptance for the master’s degree program. When you apply/register at the Foreign Office, please request a copy of this letter.

2. Call for applications at the Foreign Office

Please apply separately/in addition to the registration deadline for the summer semester at the LMU International Office: 15 January / winter semester: 15 July.

You would need to comply with all of the general program formalities in order to register. You would still need to get the application form completed and printed out.

When applying (by post) to the Foreign Office, you will need to send the following documents:

  • Completed application form
  • All qualifications and diplomas for higher education/university and all transcripts of documents
  • Officially-certified copies of the original language where appropriate and with officially approved translation. There is no need to translate the certificates into English, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Latin, Portuguese, and Romanian.
  • Registration and confirmation of previously studied programs at any other university in Germany
  • Letter of acceptance for the master’s degree program from the administrator of the degree program (can be handed in later during registration)
  • Latest CV
  • Evidence of proficiency in German: Please refer to the general German proficiency regulations. Exception: Masters and double-degree programs in which English is the language of the course. Please ask the coordinator of your master’s degree program if your course is subject to any special regulations with regard to the German language exam.
  • Marriage certificate/official proof of a change of name, if necessary,
  • When registering with the Foreign Office, a report/letter of recommendation or reference to work experience is not necessary.
  • Country-specific requirements (e.g. APS certificate)

The letter of admission is an important official document that you will need to show to the authorities and that you will need to register with the LMU university Germany. The letter of admission will be sent to you by the Foreign Office by e-mail. The validity of the German language test (exception: English-speaking master’s degree programs and double degree programs) and acceptance of the master’s degree program of your choosing are conditional on passing it.

4. Registering at the International Office

You must register before the deadline once you have a letter of acceptance. Please give all the documents referred to in the letter of admission in order to register.
