Who Can Apply for NHS Bursary Funding?
This is the next question in students’ minds after “When to apply for NHS bursary”. EU students who live in the UK could be qualified for NHS bursary eligibility or other healthcare support on the same grounds as UK students for courses beginning in 2023–24.
Undergraduate EU students studying outside the UK will be eligible to qualify for a tuition fee loan – contact the student finance body in the place where you want to study for more details. Though additional conditions exist here is a short rundown of which students in England are qualified for the NHS Bursary in 2023:
- Medical and dental students nearing the end of their studies.
- Continuing students who enrolled in a non-medical healthcare course between September 1, 2012, and August 1, 2018.
- Continuing postgraduate students who began a non-medical healthcare course on or after August 1, 2018.
- Continuing students who began dental hygiene or dental therapy course on or after August 1, 2018.
- EU students who live in the UK and are enrolled with the EU Settlement Scheme or Irish citizens may be qualified for funding for courses beginning in 2023–24.
As a full-time undergraduate, you will obtain one of five types of funding via the NHS Bursary:
- A bursary dependent on financial need (this will be calculated based on household income)
- A non-means-tested allowance of £1,000 (unaffected by household income)
- Tuition Premium Donation
- Reduced Maintenance Loan from Student Finance
- Depending on your specific conditions, you might be eligible for additional grants.
You will fulfil the residence and nationality requirements for the NHS Bursary eligibility in 2023/24 if you met the following conditions:
- You normally live in England.
- You have resided in the United Kingdom for at least three years prior to the first academic day of the course.
- You are a student in the United Kingdom.
- You are a UK citizen or have settled status (there is no time limit on your stay in the country).

Means-Tested Grant and Non-Means-Tested Bursary | NHS Bursary Guide 2023
Type of funding | Students at university located in London, living away from home | Students at university outside of London, living away from home | Students living with parents (any area) |
Means-tested bursary (per year) | Up to £3,191 | Up to £2,643 | Up to £2,207 |
Non-means-tested grant (per year) | £1,000 | £1,000 | £1,000 |
Total bursary and grant (per year) | Up to £4,191 | Up to £3,643 | Up to £3,207 |
Bear in mind that since the means-tested bursary is dependent on family revenue, you will not earn the entire yearly payment.
However, regardless of family income, all qualifying students will earn the entire £1,000 a year for the non-means-tested scholarship.
Tuition Fee Contributions | NHS Bursary Guide 2023
Course type | Amount of tuition fee contribution |
An undergraduate course that lasts 5 or 6 years | Up to £9,250 |
Graduate entry course which lasts 3 or 4 years | Up to £3,715* |
The final year of a course that must be completed after 15 weeks’ attendance or less | Up to £4,625 |
Earnings Per Household | NHS Bursary Guide 2023
Your family revenue would be used to determine all means-tested financing. When you are a dependent student, your household consists of your parents, or your wife or spouse whether you are a single student (if you have one). If you may not choose to disclose your family revenue, you might also be qualified for non-means-tested assistance.
Even if the NHS provides a bursary, you will need a maintenance loan. This may be a reduced loan, which means the amount usable in the final year would be less.

Grants for Additional Expenses | NHS Bursary Guide 2023
Dependents Allowance is for those students who financially support some other adult or child. This amount will be based on any kind of income that the dependent has.
Childcare Allowance (means-tested) supports children participating in licenced or approved childcare with their childcare expenses. Up to 85 per cent of the expense can be covered up to a certain amount, and you cannot get financial assistance whether you receive childcare funds from another entity, your child is registered for a free early education place, or your child is cared for by a parent.
You could be qualified for a Parents’ Learning Allowance if you are eligible for a Dependents Allowance for an infant.
You could be eligible for the Disabled Students’ Allowance whether you have a long-term medical or mental health problem, academic difference (such as dyslexia), or physical disability. The number is calculated by your desires rather than your profits.
If you are enrolled in a subsidised course and qualify for these grants, the sum of financial assistance offered to you will vary.
Expenses on Commuting and Clinical Research Placements
If you are in an NHS or government-funded place, you will be entitled to demand travel expenses for clinical placements that exceed the usual cost of travel to university. If authorised, these can provide lodging up to a regular maximum.
Students participating in the nursing bursary, midwifery, or allied health career courses in England will apply to the Learning Assistance Fund for travel expenses.
Medical and dental students on clinical placements during non-NHS bursary years may qualify for a travel award. This changes to Practice Placement Costs claimed by the NHS during NHS bursary-sponsored years.
Students who receive Disabled Students Allowances can only qualify for a deduction of transport expenses that are not covered by their DSA.
