Learning a language in the classroom is all quite well and fine, but you don’t really start learning the language until you know the slang. This is nowhere more true than in Britain, where slangs are so widely used and can differ greatly based on where you are in the region. People use slang to make the sound less formal. Common slang words in English are used mostly because it relaxes the mouth and helps people to talk in a more relaxed manner. It’s much simpler to use English slang words than ‘perfect English,’ which is presumably why it’s so popular! This blog will bring you some of the popular English slang words, so stay glued!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Kudos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another term of respect, of appreciation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kudos for coordinating this party. This is great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Cheers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Used to salute or raise a toast while drinking with mates (raise your glasses and clink them together)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheers to all of you! Happy birthday to George!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheers is the most common among popular English slang words and phrases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Lit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If something is really nice, fun, or thrilling, you might tell it’s “lit.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dude, the party was lit last night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. To flex<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s another way to mention that somebody shows off.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, teenagers have begun to use these slang words in English “weird flex but OK” as a snarky and mocking reaction to someone who boasts about something deemed questionable, bizarre or odd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Lowkey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lowkey is the reverse of highkey which can be seen as a means to indicate that you liked or achieved something privately, modestly or softly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a low key rooted for Daenaerys to stay on the iron throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Shook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If anyone is shook, it means they’re stunned or extremely surprised.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Babe, look at my highlighter”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Omg, I’m SHOOK”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. To clap back<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To reply to the critique of another individual.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisa is able to clap back at someone who claims she doesn’t have a good British accent.\\<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Hangry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you’re too hungry that you become very angry. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, I’m so hangry I might have five burgers in one go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Bottom Line<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The main point<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bottom line is that we really don’t have enough resources to make things functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Diss <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When a person disrespects someone else<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop dissing her in the back. Have some respect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Dig<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To actually like something<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Blimey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an expression of surprise<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blimey, look here at all this chaos! I was just going to quit the house for an hour, and look what you did!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Smashing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means there\u2019s something tremendous and fantastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a smashing time in Goa, it was so much fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Cram<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means to study hard in a limited period of time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the exam, I was so busy with my family that I had only a couple of days to work on all the revision work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16. Faff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one is one of our favourite english slang words. When someone procrastinates, or wastes time wondering around<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come on, we’ve got to go now. Stop faffing around, we’re going to be late!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17. Splash Out<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you’re spending too much money, I wanted to give Jessica a special treat for her anniversary, so I splashed out on a very romantic mini-vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18. Bee\u2019s Knees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something or someone who’s fabulous, phenomenal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19. Gutted<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is really sad and disappointed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m so gutted that I failed my entrance exam, again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20. Peanuts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When something is cheap and low price<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hate my job. I’ve got to work a lot of hours, and I get paid peanuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should buy your clothes online. You can find some great stuff for peanuts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

21. Wind up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do something like a ‘wind up’ that means you’re trying to make fun of somebody \u2013 you may be called a wind-up merchant if you do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you’re ‘wound up,’ it means you’re furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin really is a wind-up merchant, but the girl he picked up was so trustful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was just winding her up for fun, but she took the offence and got really mad!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

22. Row<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means a debate or an argument<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, my friend had a big row with her mother. He’s really sad!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

23. Donkey’s Years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one is one of the quite an used english slang words. If someone says \u2018I haven\u2019t seen you in donkey\u2019s years, it means they haven\u2019t seen you in a very long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
